UNIT TOPIC: Buying a book in a bookstore
GOAL: By the end of the course, students will be able to use and express simple phrases and vocabulary related to a specific situation, that is, be able to communicate to communicate with others in a specific context (in a bookstore) with the intention of developing in everyday life.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, students will be able to exchange oral information using simple expressions and phrases.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Name different book categories that can be found in a bookstore
- Ask for price information at a bookstore using simple phrases
- Share oral opinions about different kind of books using vocabulary related to the context.
STUDENTS' ENGLISH LEVEL: According to the results of the interview with the eighth-grade students of the Victoria Manzur institution, it was identified that the students are in level A1 according to the Common European framework.
APPROACH TO COURSE DESIGN: The approach we think appropriate for students is skill centered approach as it is necessary to improve the development of students' skills, specifically speaking and listening, as it is important to develop communication and receptive skills using diverse strategies that facilitate their development in a given context.
SYLLABUS: The syllabus of this unit presents clear information on the development of the course such as goal, learning outcomes, topic, methodology and materials needed to carry out the classes. This syllabus was designed based on the context and needs of the students, which is fundamental when it comes to knowing what they need learn for their development in a specific context.
SITUATIONAL SYLLABUS: Throughout this type of syllabus, we will hold classes that allow learners to engage in language learning through lessons based on specific situations.The classes will be contextualized in the objects, phrases and everyday situations that people in bookstores may face when purchasing books. Thus, the teacher will have ease in guiding students to learn new vocabulary, improve language comprehension and practice their communication skills.
COURSE METHODOLOGY: A methodology will be implemented according to the level of learning of eighth grade students of the Victoria Manzur institution with which they can develop their communication skills (reading, speaking, writing, listening.) through the use of different activities such as word soup, use of images and simple audios, guide book, relate images with definitions, readings, group discussions, etc., that are adapted to the backgroung and needs of the students for better understanding (language acquisition), adaptation (good use of vocabulary and grammatical structures) and language development (putting it into practice). In addition, role-playing games and guessing actvities will be carried out to establish a specific context or setting that will allow them to develop the skills needed to face real life.
COURSE EVALUATION: In this part, the teacher and the students need to know if the objectives have been achieved and if meaningful learning has been acquired. The following types of testing will assess students performance:
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: This evaluation process will help the teacher to keep a constant record of the progress of the students in learning through simple everyday activities such as conversations, interpretation of information, match, etc. In addition to headings that provide information on the level and effectiveness of students. Likewise, the teacher will give feedback to help students improve their learning process.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: Establishes whether at the end of the lesson the student was able to reach the communication objectives established at the beginning of the lesson through mid-terms exams, oral exams, quizzes, presentations, writing, etc.
